Newborn First Visits & Hospital Discharge Follow‑up Care

The days after discharge are a high‑change period. Follow‑up visits focus on feeding, growth, jaundice monitoring, and a clear plan for the next steps at home.

What Families Commonly Need After Discharge

  • A weight check and trend review
  • Feeding effectiveness evaluation
  • Jaundice monitoring and bilirubin coordination when needed
  • Newborn exam and safety screening
  • Mom’s early postpartum concerns as they relate to feeding and recovery

How Mom and Baby Concerns Connect

Feeding, weight gain, and jaundice patterns are often connected. When feeding is less effective, intake and bilirubin clearance can be affected, and mom may experience pain, tissue injury, or supply dysregulation. Evaluating both mom and baby together helps clarify what is contributing and what to do next.

How This is Evaluated

Visits include history review, focused newborn exam, weight assessment, and feeding observation when indicated. If bilirubin monitoring is needed, lab coordination and follow-up steps are discussed clearly.

How Soon Should We See You

If feeding is ineffective, weight concerns are present, or jaundice is worsening, evaluation should be scheduled promptly. Families seeking the earliest possible option may request placement on the waitlist.

What to Expect at Your Visit

You will have dedicated time to address your top concerns and questions. The goal is clarity and a plan that supports your baby’s stability at home.

When Scheduling, Please Let Us Know

If available, bring discharge paperwork, recent weights,  any bilirubin results, and the genetic screening (pink envelope). If you are unsure, schedule anyway and we will guide what is needed.
