Mastitis, Plugged Ducts & Breast Inflammation

Breast pain, swelling, redness, fever, or flu-like symptoms can be scary — and you don’t have to “power through.”

We help you treat inflammation early, relieve pain, and protect your milk supply with evidence-based care and a plan that fits your situation.

Signs You Should Be Seen

Contact us if you have:

  • A painful, firm area in the breast
  • Redness or warmth (localized or spreading)
  • Fever, chills, body aches
  • Sudden drop in milk output from one side
  • Pain with feeding/pumping
  • Recurrent “clogs” or repeated mastitis
  • Symptoms that worsen after 12–24 hours of home care

Urgent care/emergency signs: severe illness, rapidly spreading redness, pus/drainage, or symptoms not improving, we’ll help you navigate next steps.

What’s Often Going On

Many “clogs” and mastitis episodes are driven by inflammation and milk flow disruption, not always infection. Common triggers:

  • Oversupply or forceful letdown
  • Too much pumping or pumping to empty repeatedly
  • Tight bras, pressure from carriers, sleep position
  • Long stretches between feeds/removals
  • Poor latch or inefficient transfer
  • Nipple damage (increases infection risk)

What We Do in a Mastitis Visit

ou’ll get a plan designed to reduce inflammation and keep milk moving without making oversupply worse.

We may address:

  • Feeding/pumping schedule adjustments
  • Gentle milk removal strategies
  • Latch optimization to reduce trauma
  • Oversupply management
  • Comfort measures and supportive care
  • When antibiotics are appropriate (and when they may not be)
  • Prevention plan to reduce recurrence

Supportive Care

While your plan depends on your symptoms and history, supportive care often includes:

  • Rest, hydration, nutrition
  • Anti-inflammatory comfort strategies (as appropriate)
  • Avoiding aggressive massage or “digging out clogs”
  • Maintaining milk removal in a measured way

We’ll tailor guidance to your risk factors and feeding goals.

Recurrent Mastitis / Frequent Plugs

If this keeps happening, there’s usually an underlying driver we can fix:

  • Oversupply pattern
  • Pumping technique/flange fit
  • Latch or oral function concerns
  • Pressure points from bras or positioning
  • Weaning transitions

We’ll help you identify the pattern and stop the cycle.
